of things made by

Rachel Martin

Rachel Martin has been drawing since she was able to hold a pen, pencil, crayon or piece of chalk and find a scrap of paper, a grocery bag or a sidewalk to draw on.  A lonely only child, she wrote and illustrated her first books by the age of six.  Her earliest inspirations were fairy tales, ballets seen performed on television and fashion illustrations. She was mostly self-taught until she finally decided to enroll in art school, earning her BFA in Studio at the age of thirty-six.  What made her happy in childhood -- writing, drawing pictures, dancing -- is what still makes her happy today, six decades later.

Unable or unwilling to stay very long in one place, Rachel obsessively documents her frequent travels in photographs.

Often hostile to the ultimate results of her strong impulse to make things -- objects which then must be stored, collect dust, must be conserved -- Rachel has created this virtual portable storage unit for the 21st century.
